Welcome to the new WhiteHouse.gov. I'm Macon Phillips, the Director of New Media for the White House and one of the people who will be contributing to the blog.
A short time ago, Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States and his new administration officially came to life. One of the first changes is the White House's new website, which will serve as a place for the President and his administration to connect with the rest of the nation and the world.
Millions of Americans have powered President Obama's journey to the White House, many taking advantage of the internet to play a role in shaping our country's future. WhiteHouse.gov is just the beginning of the new administration's efforts to expand and deepen this online engagement.
Just like your new government, WhiteHouse.gov and the rest of the Administration's online programs will put citizens first. Our initial new media efforts will center around three priorities:
Communication -- Americans are eager for information about the state of the economy, national security and a host of other issues. This site will feature timely and in-depth content meant to keep everyone up-to-date and educated. Check out the briefing room, keep tabs on the blog (RSS feed) and take a moment to sign up for e-mail updates from the President and his administration so you can be sure to know about major announcements and decisions.
Transparency -- President Obama has committed to making his administration the most open and transparent in history, and WhiteHouse.gov will play a major role in delivering on that promise. The President's executive orders and proclamations will be published for everyone to review, and that’s just the beginning of our efforts to provide a window for all Americans into the business of the government. You can also learn about some of the senior leadership in the new administration and about the President’s policy priorities.
Participation -- President Obama started his career as a community organizer on the South Side of Chicago, where he saw firsthand what people can do when they come together for a common cause. Citizen participation will be a priority for the Administration, and the internet will play an important role in that. One significant addition to WhiteHouse.gov reflects a campaign promise from the President: we will publish all non-emergency legislation to the website for five days, and allow the public to review and comment before the President signs it.
We'd also like to hear from you -- what sort of things would you find valuable from WhiteHouse.gov? If you have an idea, use this form to let us know. Like the transition website and the campaign's before that, this online community will continue to be a work in progress as we develop new features and content for you. Obama Received $101,332 from AIG
The A.I.G. Financial Products affiliate of A.I.G. gave out $136,928, the most of any AIG affiliate, in the 2008 cycle. I would note that A.I.G.’s financial products division is the unit that wrote trillions of dollars’ worth of credit-default swaps and "misjudged" the risk.

Not much of an Economist
If you ever thought of looking to The Economist for information on politics and, well, the economy—think again! They have placed Sweden in the number 1 position in their so-called "Democracy Index." While it is a democracy, it is pretty low down on the list when it comes to personal freedom.
Oklahoma House Votes to Protect Vote Integrity
But Rep. Jerry McPeak of Warner says voter fraud is not a problem in Oklahoma. McPeak says the bill will disenfranchise elderly, poor and disabled residents who do not have photo IDs.

Plus, Rep. McPeak failed to mention that the bill would disenfranchise illegal aliens, vote-selling crack addicts, political thugs, people who don't live in Oklahoma and those that like to vote several times.

A Milwaukee woman accused of filing fraudulent voter-registration forms has been charged with one count of election fraud.
A criminal complaint released to the media Tuesday says 19-year-old Latoya T. Lewis turned in multiple forms with the same voter name on them.

Illinois: Democrats Will Not Allow Voters to Decide Who Sits in Burris Seat
The 3-2 party-line vote at a Senate committee represented another setback for Republicans who have been pushing for a special election since then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich made the appointment weeks after his Dec. 9 arrest on political corruption charges. Among the federal accusations is that Blagojevich tried to sell the very Senate seat he later gave to Burris.

Americans Believe Obama Supports Big Government
It isn't just Republicans who hold the view that Obama is a big government supporter, although almost all of them do (85 percent). Some 76 percent of Democrats think Obama believes in bigger government, as do 70 percent of independents.

Support for 'Stimulus' Plan Continues to Drop
Confidence in the $787-billion economic stimulus plan has fallen four points in the week since President Obama signed it into law, and more voters are prepared to punish their representatives for supporting it.
Thirty-four percent (34%) of U.S. voters now say the plan will help the economy, while 32% believe it will hurt, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

New York: GOP Poised to Pick Up Gillibrand's House Seat
This could well be a Republican pickup, though its national implications are limited, for three reasons. (1) It's a Republican-leaning district. Gillibrand won in 2006 only because of late-breaking scandal news about the Republican incumbent. (2) Out parties often win special House elections in the first year of an administration. (3) Tedisco is a well-known politician in metro Albany, which includes most of the district, while Murphy has some tax problems.

But a provision of the proposed law extending similar rights to owners of preserved farms has angered major open-space groups. The issue is sensitive in a state that has spent billions of dollars on popular open-space programs designed to slow sprawling development in rural and wooded areas.
The League of Municipalities also has voiced concern that the rush to renewable energy may go too far in limiting local officials' ability to regulate the new land use.
The controversy has divided the environmental community and ensnared Gov. Jon Corzine's agriculture-secretary designee before he is even sworn in. But with President Obama, Corzine and others beating the drum on clean energy, the measure appears certain to pass.

Palin Leads Primary Poll, Huckabee 2nd
Twenty-nine percent of Republicans questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Friday say they are most likely to support Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for the next GOP presidential nomination.
Right behind the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, and well within the poll's margin of error, is former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. Twenty-six percent of those questioned say they are most likely backing Huckabee, the surprise winner of the 2008 Iowa GOP caucuses.
Twenty-one percent of Republicans polled say they most likely would support former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, another GOP hopeful from the last campaign who may run again.
Nine percent say they would probably back Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, who is considered a rising star in the GOP.
